Here is Scary Monitory a horror-themed game I co-developed with another programmer. I'll be presenting the part I worked on in this project.
Scary Monitory is a tense survival horror game where you play a lone night guard monitoring surveillance cameras in a haunted manor. As strange anomalies like moving objects or eerie figures begin to appear, your job is to spot and report them before it's too late. Each missed anomaly brings you closer to death, with the atmosphere growing darker and more distorted by the minute. Every decision counts. Stay alert, find every anomaly, and try to survive the night or be consumed by the horrors within.
Camera and rooms system
First, I’ll start with the rooms and cameras. When you begin the game, you’ll see that you have access to three cameras, each corresponding to a different room. You can navigate between these three rooms, but there's a unique feature: each time you restart the game, you may encounter different rooms. There are a total of five rooms, but only three are randomly selected at the start of each game to make it easier to focus on a smaller area. To encourage replayability and keep things fresh for the players, we decided to implement this system.
Anomalies :
Then I will talk about the different anomalies, which can be a simple object that appears, a monster, or a multitude of strange events !
The key feature is that the appearing object cannot manifest in the room if the player's camera is in the same room.
Monster anomalies :
Now, I will talk about monsters ! There are different types of monsters :
The "Mimic"
The first one is the "mimic". When you see a book levitating, be careful it might not be just a book. There’s a chance that the book is actually a mimic. If you click on it, the monster will appear, and you’ll have a limited time to succeed in a quick-time event (QTE). If you succeed, the mimic book will close, but if you fail, the mimic will kill you.
The "Madre"
The QTE event will also involve another monster called "Madre". This horrific creature appears in various rooms, and, like the mimic, you should be cautious when you click on it. Failing the QTE will lead to serious consequences, so make sure not to slip up.
Camera event :
Since the gameplay centers around monitoring through cameras, we’ve added a unique feature: the cameras can turn off, and you'll need to reactivate them. Here’s how it appends :
